David Beckham will not be joining Paris St-
Germain, according to the sporting director,
Leonardo. The French club were informed last
week that a deal had become remote and the
midfielder is instead almost certain to sign a new
two year deal – worth around £5million a year –
withLA Galaxy after the club and the MLS made
strong efforts to keep him in California.
"It's over," Leonardo told L'Equipe. "It's a shame.
But the welfare of his family in Los Angeles, the
wish not to change everything in his life, weighed
heavily."
The PSG president, Nasser al-Khelaifi, said from
Qatar: "We didn't reach an agreement – he's a
great player, I met him and it's bad luck we didn't
reach an agreement. We weren't far, but there
are family issues and I think that was the reason.
It was very difficult to move the family."
Khelaifi also told French radio station RMC that the
36-year-old midfielder would be staying in the
US, saying: "David Beckham is in Los Angeles and
he's going to stay over there."
Beckham has been enthused by the success of
the Galaxy after they won last season's MLS
championship, and the quality of a team that also
includes Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan.
Leonardo denied that Carlo Ancelotti, who last
week replaced Antoine Kombouaré as coach, has
had anything to do with Beckham's apparent
change of heart.
"It is not the arrival of Ancelotti that has changed
everything," he said. Beckham was thought to be
keen on a move back to Europe, with a place in
Britain's Olympic team the supposed aim.
