Belgian First Division: Genk 2 Sint-Truiden 1
Genk came from a goal down at home to defeat
Sint-Truiden 2-1, staying in touch with the Belgian
First Division title race in the process.
The hosts fell behind on 39 minutes, when Wim
Mennes’ tricky run and cross on from the left
handed Pierre Yves Ngawa the easiest of finishes
at the far post.
Genk pushed hard for an equaliser, but had to
wait until the 53rd minute to pull level.
It came in somewhat controversial
circumstances, with Sint-Truiden midfielder Koen
Daerden – formerly of the hosts – adjudged to
have brought down Fabian Camus as the Genk
playmaker raced into the box.
Eli Barda took the responsibility and converted the
penalty well, with his side scoring the match-
winning goal just two minutes later.
Christian Benteke had come on at half-time for
veteran Thomas Buffel, but did his claims for a
starting role no harm by finishing neatly past
Davino Verhulst in the Sint-Truiden goal.
Genk move fourth on the table ahead of the rest
of the weekend’s matches, while Sint-Truiden
remain mired in the relegation zone and could be
more than three points adrift of safety come
Sunday.
